Update: 2014-04-17
With the recent warm temps, the stream behind our house has basically risen every day for two straight weeks and last night we got another 2 inches of snow. By mid-afternoon, it had all melted and sure enough, the river was higher than we've ever seen it. Nothing particularly unusual about that.
As we walked home from our lunch-break-excursion, one of the local bald eagles flew overhead at a lower altitude than we normally see it and Jamie took off up the road to see where it was heading. She couldn't locate it, but she spotted some eagle tracks in the snow off to the side of the road. Looking closer, she realized that they were all leading to the remains of some large animal.
Or so she thought.
She showed me some of the pics she took and after work, I headed up the road to check out the carnage. I don't think anything could've prepared me for what I was about to see. By this time, with a couple more hours of sunlight beating down, all of the snow and the eagle tracks were gone. But the animal remains were still there.
Upon closer inspection, it appears to not be a single animal, but a mix of body parts from multiple animals. I took a few pics, came home and called the game warden to report it. He asked me a few questions and said he'd send someone out to pick it up.
Curiousity got the better of me and I decided to head back out for a second look, because I really don't know what I'd seen. It was getting dark by this point, but I managed to get some more detailed pictures. Click the pics here for hi-res versions:
